Spring is an ideal time to do a bit of cleaning in and around your home. As a homeowner, you should probably start by cleaning out the yard or clearing your garage for any unwanted items that need to be thrown out ages ago. You would finally finish the other chores stacked up over the last few months. Or you would start by cleaning your windows. As one of the top window replacement companies, we’re here to give you some tips on cleaning your windows during spring cleaning. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Get the Necessary Supplies
It’s important that you have the necessary supplies needed for cleaning your windows. Be sure you have the basics, including the following:
- Bucket
- Sponge, squeegee, and brush for scrubbing
- A soft-bristled brush for dusting
- Lint-free cloth, chamois, or an absorbent microfiber for wiping down windows
- cleaning products
If you don’t have some of these items, you can usually find them at your local hardware store. As for the brushes and sponges, be sure to use the right ones for your windows. For instance, a squeegee is great for cleaning picture windows while sponges or brushes are better for cleaning multi-pane windows.
2. Schedule During Daytime
Before you start cleaning your windows, be sure to pick a favorable time to clean them. For instance, if your home has had a recent composite window replacement, it would be best if you can clean them when they are not directly under the sun, or during a cloudy day. This would be easier to clean on your part, and the cleaning solution used will dry up properly. The sunshine can dry up the cleaning liquid too fast and can leave watermarks or streaks on your windows.
3. Make Your Own Cleaning Solution
It takes more than just water to clean your windows properly. While there are specific cleaning products available for your windows, making your cleaning solution is still effective. One common DIY cleaning solution is mixing a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid for every 2 gallons of water. Another is equal parts water and white vinegar.
4. Clean Properly
It’s better to clean properly than to wash quickly and poorly. Before washing your windows, be sure to clean off any loose dirt with a soft-bristled brush. Remember to brush around the frame including the sills, tracks, and hinges. When making your own cleaning solution, avoid making it too sudsy. If you recently had a fiberglass window replacement, be sure to use the squeegee properly by following a rhythm and maintaining contact.
5. Don’t Forget to Clean the Window Screens
Lastly, make sure to clean your window screens. Spring is more than a perfect time to clean them thoroughly. Most window screens are actually easy to take out. Scrub them with a non-abrasive sponge and some cleaner. Wash them down with a water hose and leave it to dry outside. If you have a lot of windows and the screens vary in size, you can mark each screen with a name. Or after cleaning, you can leave the screen under the window of which it belonged to.
